In what is being viewed as an action in preparation for the upcoming release of its next generation gaming console, the Playstation 5 (PS5), Sony has filed a trademark application for the mark “HEIGHTEN YOUR SENSES” with the United States Patent & Trademark Office.
The slogan is a reference to the PS5’s ‘DualSense Wireless Controller’ which will be sold with the console when it is released late this November. While Sony only very recently filed the trademark application for the slogan, it has already been using the ‘Heighten Your Senses’ slogan in its marketing of the upcoming PS5 controller, describing the controller as offering “immersive haptic feedback, dynamic adaptive triggers, and a built-in microphone.”
As reported by Comicbook.com, Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management made this statement about the “DualSense” controllers when they were first revealed earlier this year:
“We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller . . . This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud. We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow.”
Similar to the PS4’s “Dualshock” controller, the PS5’s “DualSense” controller is also supposed to feature built-in speakers and a light bar, in an effort to engage with a player’s senses during active gameplay. The “DualSense” is also advertised to have new adaptive triggers for its L2 and R2 buttons, so that certain actions, like pulling a bowstring to shoot an arrow, will have a physical reaction that you can feel in the controller. The controller is also shown to come with a USB-C port, motion sensors, a headset jack, and more.
Sony’s video showcase of the “DualSense” controller features the official slogan for the PS5 console, “Play Has No Limits,” which ironically has not been applied for as a U.S. trademark to any extent that we could find.
Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, applied for the mark on June 12, 2020 (see U.S. Serial No. 88961806). The application was filed under international class 028, and is identified as being used for “controllers for game consoles; game controllers for computer games.”
