For the November 2017 monthly spotlight, which is our first ever spotlight, we are happy to dedicate our first EIP spotlight to Francine D. Ward. Francine is currently an attorney at Monty White LLP, located in Palm Desert, CA, where she heads its Business and Intellectual Property Law Group. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1986. From there, she went on to further her education at Georgetown University Law School, where she graduated with her JD in 1989.
In her spare time, Francine provides pro bono services to several individuals and nonprofits which include Legacies in Motion, The Felix Organization, and California Lawyers for the Arts. She serves on the Advisory Board to the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs, and is also a leader in the ABA’s Intellectual Property Law Section (which has over 19,000 members) where she is a current member of the IP Council, which is the section’s governing body. In addition to her amazing track record, Francine is also the Vice Chair of the Right of Publicity Committee and the Vice Chair of the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Committee. Francine also teaches intellectual property law at the California Desert Trial Academy College of Law.
Francine is a not just a woman in IP, but she is changing the face of what a career woman can do. She is not just an attorney; she has multiple side jobs, including being a motivational speaker and an author. The extent of her IP reach includes but is not limited to, copyrights, trademarks, internet, publishing, and entertainment law issues. She also has her hands in social media and business law. She is licensed to practice law not only in the state of California, but in New York and the District of Columbia as well. She lives her life as an example to women and men alike that if you put your mind to it, then you can achieve anything you set out to do. Keep up the good work Francine!
